The Reverend Canon, Benedykt Chmielowski (1700 - 1763) went blind. Like Borges, he went blind from books. Sitting in his mansion in the Firlejowski forest, he decided to put to paper all that others had written in their books, from the beginning of the world created by God. Naturally, there were practical reasons: so that a Polish nobleman, priest, or merchant would not have to dig through huge volumes, and purchase whole libralies. Having gathered all truth about the world, the Reverend Canon offers it encapsulated in four volumes. This is how theNowe Ateny - The New Athens(1745 - 1756) originated. Until our days the first Polish encyclopaedia has been considered an example of obscurantism. It is wholy unjustified.
The New Athenswas written in XVIIIth century. It's really rich
root of mediaeval imaginations: witches, fantasticals people and animals,
strange countries, hell and heaven, demons...
